A Smackerel of Something

The following is an "extended" haiku. I'm not sure if one is allowed to write an extended haiku--sort of defeats the purpose of the whole 3 lines, 17 syllables thing--but I did it anyway. It was inspired by Stephanie Revennaugh's lovely painting. She is painting a series inspired by locally produced food in Coshocton County. For more of her work, go to http://www.facebook.com/StephanieRevennaughFineArt
It was also inspired by my memories of Michael from the time he was 3 until about 6, when he was Winnie ther Pooh's second most ardent fan; and by my mother who from the time she was about 3 until she died at 73, was Winnie ther Pooh's most ardent fan.

(Thanks to Mullet Apiaries for the honey! I'm not sure who made the bread, but it looks like one of Marissa Mullett's loaves.  Both of these products can be purchased at Local Bounty http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Local-Bounty-Coshocton/214163635342533)

eleven o'clock
a small brown eyed boy requests
a smackerel of something

how can she refuse?
go and find the book, she says--

with floors to be swept
dishes to be washed
lessons to be learned,

she slices the bread
sets the kettle on the fire
and notices how honey
melts into the bread--

pools in all the holes
makes itself at home
fills itself with light
