3 Woodcock Haiku

Kevin, Michael, and I like to take walks at dusk this time of year in search of Mr. Woodcock performing his amazing mating dance.  On this particular evening, in addition to witnessing woodcock's entertainments, we also saw 2 deer, a couple of vultures, some really cool lightning, and bright planets Venus and Jupiter.  All this was accompanied by the serenade of spring peepers.  Oh yeah, and we saw one of our neighbors enjoying an evening walk too.

our spring ritual
standing with faces upturned
waiting for woodcock

listening for woodcock
but all we hear are peepers
which is good enough

standing in a field
listening to woodcock buzz
finally he flies
